Future Events

May EVENT - TUESDAY, May 15TH

SPEAKER: Stuart Coppedge

"Hear about the future Summit House at Pikes Peak from the Lead Architect"

unnamedHear about engaging five primary clients, over 40 additional events and agencies, and a half million citizens during the most public process in the history of the Pikes Peak region while designing a new visitor center on America's Mountain for 600,000 annual patrons. Find out how pursuing the Living Building Challenge is both constraining and enhancing the project.

  • Learn the history of human interaction with the Pikes Peak region and the peak itself.
  • Compare and contrast the current Pikes Peak summit visitor experience with the future vision by exploring the design team’s efforts to provide a superior all around experience.
  • Contrast the prescriptive LEED (more points = less harm) environmental design rating system with Living Building Challenge (focus on restorative).
  • Get to zero, net zero water and electricity that is. Explore resource strategies to provide services at 14,115 feet above sea level.
  • Evaluate building design and materials for durability and resilience by examining the fundamental challenges and strategies employed to design for this purpose and climate.

RTA Architects is Southern Colorado’s leading firm and specializes in education, healthcare, and civic projects. A University of Oklahoma graduate and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Stuart Coppedge leads RTA’s current work at the Springs Rescue Mission, the William J. Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the new restrooms at the Garden of the Gods, and the new Pikes Peak Summit Complex, which you will hear about this evening. Coppedge chairs the Colorado Springs Downtown Review Board and serves as Board Vice Chair for both the Downtown Partnership and Atlas Preparatory School. He served his profession as President of both AIA Colorado South and AIA Colorado before being elected to the AIA National Board of Directors as the 2012-2014 Director representing the six state Western Mountain Region and again to serve as 2016-2017 National Treasurer. No stranger to the high country, he has hiked 38 of Colorado’s 14ers, including multiple summits of Pikes Peak from both sides. He considers leading the Pikes Peak work a once in a career challenge for an architect and a true honor for a long-time citizen of Colorado Springs.

Come out and have a good time, enjoy the company of old friends, meet some new ones and satisify your curiousit quotient. Everyone is welcome! Water/soft drinks always available. Come early and have dinner!
