LISTEN TO HIM: 40 Steps on the Road to Resurrection

The number 40 appears a lot in the Bible and when it does it usually marks a period of transition. Noah, his family, and their floating zoo were on the Ark for 40 days in the period between the flood and a fresh start; Moses and the Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 years between the slavery of Egypt and the joy of the Promised Land; Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days of fasting and testing before starting his public ministry. Forty days is about the right amount of time to change a habit, change an outlook, or change one’s future.

For the past year we’ve been in a period of crisis, our own flood of bad news, slavery to the whims of an unseen virus, fasting from seeing one another, and being tested every day. As we begin to come back together for in-person worship as the people of God, there’s a lot we will have to relearn, to reflect upon, and to consider as we look to the future. The Lenten season provides us with a 40-day period for just such a period of preparation—a pause between the chaos we’ve known and the future God has for us.

The Sunday before Lent is Transfiguration Sunday (this year on February 14) and in that amazing revelation of the glory of Christ on the mountain, a voice from heaven declares Jesus to be the beloved Son of God but then adds an admonition: “LISTEN TO HIM.” If we want to know the way forward, the way to God’s future, there’s no better way to do that than to listen deeply to the one who holds that future in his nail-scarred hands.

In this Lenten sermon series, Pastors Bob and Jason will lead us on a journey through the Gospel of Luke from the Mount of Transfiguration to the empty tomb and the Emmaus Road. It will be a familiar journey, but one with some new twists as we listen with new ears sharpened by our own time of testing. Each Sunday, we’ll encounter the word of Christ and listen to what he has to say to our past, our present, and our future, and we’ll have the chance to develop some new habits along the way, including a daily immersion in Jesus’ own words in the Gospel of Luke. Here are some ways you can join us on the journey:

Sundays at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 – “LISTEN TO HIM” Sermon series (in-person and live-stream). Begins Sunday, February 14

Ash Wednesday – February 17 – Services at Noon and 7:00pm (in-person and live-stream). We will offer two Ash Wednesday services on February 17. You can sign up to attend a service at LINK or watch online. We will distribute ashes in a way that is creative while remaining socially distanced.

Morning Prayer – 7:30am each weekday – We will use the book Listen to Him: 40 Steps on the Road to Resurrection by J.D. Walt. This daily devotional book will guide your reading and, each morning, we will have a time for discussion and prayer led by one of our pastors. Those sessions will take place on Zoom and will also be broadcast on Facebook Live (you will need to join the Zoom session in order to participate in the discussion, however). You can sign up at tlumc.org/registration and join us. Those sessions will begin on Thursday, February 18. Books are available for $5 at the church and can be picked up during worship or by appointment. Email Cary at .

Lent Study – Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope – Wednesdays at 6:30pm via Zoom (Feb. 24-March 31). One of the ways we can learn to listen to Jesus more clearly is to listen along with our African American brothers and sisters and how they hear his words of hope, change, and liberation. This important study by Esau McCaulley will give us new ears to hear the cries of our black neighbors through the lens of Scripture and join them in working for justice in the way of Jesus. You can sign up at LINK. Copies of the book Reading While Black are available online or wherever books are sold.

This could be our most impactful Lenten season ever. Join us as we gather together as a church family and “LISTEN TO HIM!”
