New Lectionary Sermon Series: Awakening Advent

advent draft 01 2New Lectionary Sermon Series: Awakening Advent

November 27th - December 18th, 2022

As the days grow shorter and the nights longer; and as many are settling down for “a long winter’s nap,” the Scripture lessons for the Advent season shake us from a spiritual slumber like a sudden light or an urgent alarm clock. “Now is the moment for you to wake from sleep!” says the Apostle Paul. “Keep awake…for you do not know when your Lord is coming!” says Jesus. Advent calls us to be ready for the return of our Lord and the salvation he brings as well as his judgment and justice. It’s an invitation to hear again the urgent call of John the Baptist to “Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is near!” and take heart in the confident cry of Isaiah to “Be strong and do not fear! Here is your God!”

Join us each Sunday of Advent as Pastor Bob Kaylor brings us this special sermon series based on the Scripture readings from Year A of the Revised Common Lectionary. Advent is the beginning of the Christian year and an opportunity for us to reconnect again with Christ and with our church family as we look toward Christmas. Each Sunday’s sermon also corresponds to the themes for lighting the Advent candles:

November 27 – Awakening Hope

December 4 – Awakening Peace

December 11 – Awakening Joy

December 18 – Awakening Love (Choir Cantata at the 11:00am service)

We’ll also be offering a different sort of “wake up call” during the Advent season as we join together online each day, Monday through Saturday, for morning prayer using readings and prayers based on The Book of Common Prayer. Members of our church staff will be live online each morning at 7:00am to lead these times of prayer to help you wake with the Word. You can join us each day at tlumc.org/live. We will also have copies of A Field Guide for Daily Prayer, the version of morning prayer we’ll be using each day, available for purchase for $3.00 so that you can follow along and continue your own rhythm of prayer as individuals and families during the season.
