United Methodist Friends in the U.S.,
Our nation is dealing with significant division as we approach the November election. United Methodists from different perspectives can agree that anger and discord have dominated the news cycle as a constant barrage of negativity hits us every day.
The staff team at Tri-Lakes UMC in Monument, Colorado, brainstormed some ways we could try to change the conversation and inject some wisdom, civility, and compassion into the conversation. Our idea was to use John Wesley’s advice to the Methodist societies in the midst of the 1774 parliamentary elections as a different sort of “campaign” sign for our members to put in their yards in the run-up to November 3. The sign includes space for a QR code that links to a special page on our web site introducing people to John Wesley, his voting advice, and to what it means to be a Methodist.
We’d like to offer our design for any church in the country to use in printing their own signs for distribution. You would simply need to add your QR code and logo and then take it to your local printer who can make up the signs (and who will appreciate the business in these tough economic times). Information about the dimensions and materials used can be found under the "Template Files" tab on this page.
Of course, you can also work up your own design and print similar signs. That’s great with us! We’d love to see United Methodist Churches around the country dot the landscape with this great advice to vote for the candidates you judge most worthy, but also to speak no evil against their opponents, nor have any “sharpened spirit” against those who voted differently. It’s a way for us to demonstrate the best of Methodism to a hurting and divided culture.
You can email our Communications Director, Sam Hastings, at with any questions you might have. We hope you will consider this unique outreach opportunity for your church!
In Christ,
Rev. Jim Ward
