SPEAKER:

Dick Fairley, Former DJ

Current curator of the KRCC jazz collection

Topic:

"Jazz Standards from The Great American Songbook"

Presentation Description:

The Great American Songbook includes popular songs composed between (roughly) 1920 and 1950.  There is no precise way to determine which songs are included in the GAS (no pun intended); a song is consider to be a member of the GAS if it was, and continues to be popular as indicated by the number of recordings made by different musicians, record sales, radio play, and other indications of continuing popularity – they are the classics of popular music from the GAS era.

Jazz standards are not precisely determined either; they are songs every jazz musician is expected to know and can play without hesitation or rehearsal.  Many jazz standards are jazz treatments of songs from the Great American Songbook.  Others were composed by jazz and blues musicians.  In this presentation, I will discuss some of the great popular songs and their composers and lyricists – some of whom lived fascinating lives.  I will then discuss why some popular standards became jazz standards and cover some of the musicians who recorded them – they too lived fascinating lives.  There will be plenty of time for questions and comments and we will hear some of the jazz standards by some of the jazz musicians who have recorded the songs.

Dick Fairley Bio:

Dick Fairley is a longtime aficionado of jazz and popular music from the Great American Songbook.  He was a jazz disco jockey at KRCC (91.5 and online at KRCC.org) for many years.  He continues as the curator of the KRCC jazz collection.  Dick is a retired professor and is currently a consultant and trainer for software engineering, systems engineering, and project management.  He and his wife, Mary Jane, live in Teller County near Woodland Park.
