Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity (CCHfH)

Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity (CCHfH)

Mission:  Seeking to put God’s love into action, CCHfH brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. CCHfH is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. All donations are tax deductible

Goal:  to build simple, decent homes by using volunteer labor and donated materials whenever possible, and to provide no-interest mortgages to Habitat homeowners.  www.chaffehabitat.org

In July 2017, Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church sent a crew of 10 people to CCHfH. We completed foundation work on the Nathrop house, installed a sprinkler system at the Salida duplex, and prepared the new intern space with appliances and cabinetry, and painting. A TLUMC crew of up to 10 people is scheduled to work on October 2 and 3. Crew members can expect to paint, install fencing or drywall/sheetrock or landscaping, put in a roof or siding, or any variety of finishing tasks.

When will we leave? We will depart for Chaffee County directly from TLUMC on Sunday October 1 after the 9:30 worship service.

Where will we stay overnight? We will stay at the Congregational United Church of Christ (217 Crossman Avenue, Buena Vista, CO  81211). We will sleep in classrooms. The church is equipped with one shower for each gender. CUCC expects us to arrive on Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. and depart Tuesday, October 3 at 8:00 a.m.

How will we get there? We will carpool and will need some crew members to drive their personal vehicles.

What will we be eating? We will prepare our own breakfasts and dinners in the CUCC kitchen. We may also need to pack lunches. If the crew prefers, we can plan to eat the Sunday or Monday dinner at a local restaurant.

How can I be a leader on this mission? We will need a photographer, devotion leader, meal coordinator, and a hike/activity coordinator.

What should I bring?

  • Air mattress, cot, camp pad (CUCC will not have beds)
  • Sheets, blankets, pillow(s)
  • Shower supplies – towel, wash cloth, soap, shampoo, shower shoes
  • Clothing appropriate for sleep, construction-type work, and one restaurant meal
  • Work boots or sturdy shoes for the worksite and a possible hike
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, rain gear
  • Flashlight

What will we do during our down time? Our early arrival on Sunday allows us time to enjoy Buena Vista and the surrounding areas. If a volunteer is willing to coordinate a hike our crew can fellowship while catching the October scenery. Also, we found the après dinner conversation and card games highly entertaining during our July mission.

If you are interested in participating in this short-term CCHfH mission trip, please email Jennifer Kaylor at . Include your name, cell phone number, mission trip leadership role (if applicable), and whether you are willing to be a carpool driver.

Please note that the number of participants is limited to 10.

Deadline for sign-up is 8 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2017.
